DJ James Kennedy talks retiring ‘White Kanye’ nickname, new music releases
“Vanderpump Rules” star James Kennedy is “officially retiring” his self-given “White Kanye” nickname, the DJ told Page Six on Wednesday.
“I’m just going to be James Kennedy — the best producer that I can be, myself,” he told us. “But his music still lives within me.”
In 2016, the Bravo star began calling himself the white-version of Kanye West because he, like the mega-producer and rapper, “never doubted himself.”
“I think I’m like him in the sense that I explore sound,” Kennedy previously told The Daily Dish. “I want to create something nobody has ever heard or seen before and I have nothing stopping me, the only thing that could possibly stop me is myself.”
Kennedy, 28, added that he’s still a big fan of West, 43, and shared that he would love to collaborate with the “Jesus Is Lord” rapper someday.
“I’ve got a whole folder of stuff waiting for you, like my own Kanye West production folder,” he said in a message to West.
In the meantime, Kennedy is still working on new music, including his first remix to be released through a major label.
Last week, the DJ dropped a mix to Jason Derulo’s “Coño” alongside singer Puri and rapper Jhorrmountain via Atlantic/Spinnin’ records.
“It’s a really fun track,” Kennedy said. “It’s bass boosted and it hits really good in the club, so I thought, ‘Why not remix it?’”
Kennedy also shared that he was looking forward to touring with his new music, but due to the coronavirus pandemic had to cancel those plans, including his “big Vegas debut” in April.
“It’s just crazy to see how much the music world has had to adapt in the last few months,” he said. “Of course, I’ve adapted with it. I’ve just been making music nonstop in my little cubby and been doing a lot of mixes and livestreams, as well.”
The DJ added, “I’m really excited, though, for when the world does get back to normal and I can go crazy in the club again.”
