Fans create petition to rename NYC’s Longacre Theatre after Nick Cordero

Fans have launched a petition to rename New York City’s Longacre Theatre in memory of Broadway star Nick Cordero, who passed away on Sunday due to complications from coronavirus.

The Longacre, which was home to Cordero’s last broadway show “A Bronx Tale,” was built in 1912 and is currently named after Longacre Square — the original name for Times Square. The rechristened theatre would be called “The Nick Cordero Theatre.”

The petition had over 26,000 signatures on Tuesday.

“‘A Bronx Tale, The Musical’ was the last Broadway show Nick Cordero starred in. This musical set a record as the longest-running musical in Longacre history,” the petition reads.

“With the passing of this incredibly talented and beloved Broadway star, it is the perfect memory for him and his family legacy, to assure his name will always be in lights in the Broadway Community.”

Cordero, who was 41 at the time of his death, was admitted to the Cedar-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles back in April. He had his right leg amputated, and was held in a medically induced coma for the majority of his hospitalization.

A GoFundMe, which was set up following Cordero’s death to help support his wife, Amanda Cloots, as well as his year-old son Elvis, has over $984,630 with the original goal set at $48,000.
