Janelle Monáe to headline NYC Pride Island 2020

Janelle Monáe will headline NYC Pride Island 2020 on Saturday, June 27, at Pier 97 in New York’s Hudson River Park.

NYC Pride announced Friday morning that the Grammy-nominated “Tightrope” singer and actress (“Harriet,” “Hidden Figures”) will be part of the annual, weekend-long LGBTQ festival that will also feature appearances by Australian pop star Betty Who, 28; Brazillian singer Luísa Sonza, 21; Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot; and DJs Coco and Breezy.

“Pride means so much to so many of us, and to have the opportunity to share my live performance during Pride has always been a dream,” said Monáe, 34, in a statement. “Celebrating Pride in NYC is a rite of passage for a queer person. I am grateful for the community it creates, and I can’t wait to party with everyone.”

In 2018, Monae labeled herself a “queer black woman in America” during an interview with Rolling Stone, adding that she is “someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherf - - ker.” She has also been linked to actress and singer Tessa Thompson, 36.

Pre-sale tickets for Mastercard holders are available through Thursday, March 12, at the NYC Pride site and individual Pride Island tickets will also go on sale March 13.

A headlining Pride Island act for Sunday, June 28, has not yet been announced, but it has been revealed that on that day, DJs Dani Toro and Eddie Martinez will take the stage, and the highlight of NYC Pride 2020 — the annual Pride March — will take place. The first march was held in 1970, although New York marked the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising with World Pride festivities in 2019.
