Megan Fox got candid about how being hypersexualized caused a “breakdown” in her mental health

Megan Fox was a mainstay on the big screen during the 2000s. After starring in Transformers and its sequel, she solidified her status as one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood. But it turns out that behind the scenes, Fox was struggling with her fame and the way she was treated by people in the industry. In a new interview, she reveals she suffered a “genuine psychological breakdown” after being hypersexualized, and we are so sad to hear this.

Fox sat down with Jennifer’s Body screenwriter Diablo Cody for Entertainment Tonight in honor of the film’s 10-year anniversary. The two talked about how the horror-comedy was panned by critics and audiences alike at the time, though it has since become a cult classic. Both women discussed their mental health around that time, with Fox opening up about the struggles she was contending with off camera.

“There was so much going on with me at that time, that movie being picked apart was not at the top of my [list of concerns],” Fox told Cody, according to ET. “Because I had such a fraught relationship with the public, and the media, and journalists, and I was struggling so much at that time in general, this didn’t stand out as a particularly painful moment, it was just part of the mix.”

Alluding to alleged degrading treatment by Transformers director Michael Bay, as well as by the tabloids and celebrity blogs, she noted how she was “objectified” and “sexualized.”

“It wasn’t just [Jennifer’s Body], it was every day of my life, all the time, with every project I worked on and every producer I worked with. It preceded a breaking point for me,” she said.

She added, “I think I had a genuine psychological breakdown where I wanted just nothing to do. I didn’t want to be seen, I didn’t want to have to take a photo, do a magazine, walk a carpet, I didn’t want to be seen in public at all because the fear, and the belief, and the absolute certainty that I was going to be mocked, or spat at, or someone was going to yell at me, or people would stone me or savage me for just being out…so I went through a very dark moment after that.”

Fox has been open about the misogynistic and unfair ways women in Hollywood are treated. However, she said that she felt ignored when she spoke out about being hypersexualized prior to the #MeToo movement.

She told Cody, “I was speaking out and saying, ‘Hey, these things are happening to me and they’re not okay,’ and everyone was like, ‘Oh well, fuck you. We don’t care, you deserve it.’ Because everybody talked about how you looked or how you dressed or the jokes you made.”

Aside from the fact that Jennifer’s Body was way ahead of its time, we love Fox as both an actress and an activist, and our hearts hurt to hear that she was made to feel this way. We’re listening, and we hope that she feels heard and validated about her experiences moving forward.
