Natalie Portman Is Your New Thor
Thor: Ragnarok remains one of Marvel’s best movies to date, which is all the more reason to get excited about the recent announcement that director Taika Waititi was returning to helm the next Thor movie.
Waititi took Thor in a new, almost subversive direction, not only making his installment much more fun than the two that came before and putting Chris Hemsworth’s comedic talents to good use, but also turning the movie into a critique of colonialism. And the upcoming movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, written in a distinctly 80’s, She-Ra-esque font, promises to be just as surprising.
First, there’s Tessa Thompson, who’s returning as Valkyrie, evidently as the new ruler of Asgard. Addressing the crowd at Comic-Con, Thompson laid out her character’s priorities in the new film: “First of all, as king, she needs to find her queen.”
In other major news, Natalie Portman is returning as Thor’s sometimes-love interest, Jane Foster. But instead of just coming back as a pining lover, Portman will pick up her own hammer as Lady Thor. As Variety reports, this won’t surprise anyone familiar with the comics, where Foster wields Thor’s weapon, Mjolnir, after he’s deemed unworthy. The hammer’s been destroyed in the movies, but as is often the case with fantasy and sci-fi, there’s probably some way around that.
“I’ve always had hammer envy,” Portman told the crowd.
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to premiere in November 2021.
