Words From Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That Left Us With Life Lessons

10 Things We Learned From MLK

A man of purpose, fairness, and freedom are just a few of the words used to describe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (MLK). King was an activist and civil rights leader who became a leading pioneer in helping to abolish racial boundaries present in America from the mid 1950s until the late ‘60s. Dr. King was a man who strived for peace and prosperity for all Americans, no matter their race, religion, nationality, or gender.

Since his assassination in 1968,, America has come a long way. Although there is still plenty of work to be done, better days are soon to be among us. We must look for the strong-minded leaders in our lives and continue to listen to the voices that inspire and motivate us to make America a place where all feel welcome and free.

In honor of all of the remarkable things Dr. King has done for this country and the world. Here are a few life lessons that we have learned from King’s inspiring life and story.

Meaningful Words We Have Learned From MLK

1. Education Is Key

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Education is important because it serves as the building blocks for the young to learn how to think carefully and function honorably in their life and within society.

2. The True Meaning of Success

“We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries or the size of our automobiles rather than by the quality of our service and relationship to mankind.”

Although some success may result in having more material possessions, real success lies within.

3. Love Over Hate

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

The solution to evil is good, and the solution to hate is love.

4. The Measure of a Man

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

The true colors of a person are displayed when things get hard, not when things are easy.

5. Stand up for What You Believe in

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Never let anyone deter you from your dreams. Stand up for what’s right and for what you believe in.

6. You’re Entitled to Your Destiny

“No person has the right to rain on your dreams.”

No one has the right to make your dreams or goals feel less than theirs.

7. Love Is Unity

“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.”

When they go low, you go high.

8. Never Give Up

“There is no gain without struggle.”

In order to reap the product, you must first endure the struggle.

9. The Journey Is Within

“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”

Begin the journey, even if you don’t see the whole picture yet.

10. Never Stop

“If you can’t fly, run; if you can’t run, walk; if you can’t walk, crawl; but by all means keep moving.”

No matter what your situation is, never give up. Never stop pushing to become better than the person you were yesterday.
