How to Spend Valentine’s Day Alone
Valentine’s Day? In the middle of cuffing season? During a pandemic?

Be Your Own Valentine
Whether it’s burgers, beer, or beer-braised burgers, we live in an era where any cuisine your heart desires can be at your front door in under an hour. Fancy dinners and expensive jewelry are so 2019. This is 2021, baby; restaurants are still a public health hazard and most diamonds are bloody à la Blood Diamond. Thus, you gotta spoil yourself. Add a side of fries, say yes to that exclusive J. Crew Warehouse sale, or treat yourself the way you’d treat someone you want to have some sex with at one point. The world’s your oyster (which you could also eat if you wanted).
Embrace the Internet
There’s a lot of value in remembering how things used to be before everyone had an iPhone. To think that there was a time when you couldn’t just reach into your pocket to settle an argument about Ethan Hawke’s birthplace. Crazy, right? Now, anything you could possibly want to learn can be learned and anyone you can see can be seen. So, why limit yourself? Take a cooking class. Learn about dance and choreography through Masterclass. Fall down a rabbit hole of old Vine videos on YouTube.
“Do something special, like taking an online class in a topic you’re interested in,” says relationship coach Marisa T. Cohen, PhD. “Attend trivia with friends or host a game night via Zoom. Attend a virtual concert, show, improv performance, or examine new or favorite exhibits at a cultural institution.”
For those who choose to go the non-virtual route, you could always just read a book. Oh, and by the way, Ethan Hawke was born in Austin, Texas.
Get Sexy on Your Own Dime
Know what’s nice about spending a holiday known for sex by yourself? You suddenly have the time to master the art of sex — in all forms — just in time for next year. Adult actress and director Christina Shine thinks Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to know yourself on a more intimate level.
“Buy a brand new vibrator or fleshlight and love yourself all day,” says Shine. “Subscribe to your favorite pornstar’s OnlyFans and have fun! They would love to see you there!”
Shine is also a huge supporter of watching movies all day and eating chocolate while crying. It’s a truly winning combination.
Veg out and take no visitors. Light some candles, slip into some fancy-yet-somehow-still-professional pajamas, and snuggle up in those comfy sheets of yours. Who says you can’t order every meal? Want to start and beat a video game in one sitting? How about an attempt at a movie marathon all from under the covers? There’s no shame in not getting out of bed until the 14th. It’s easier than you think.
Hey, remember cooking? A study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology suggests an “everyday creative activity” like cooking can actually relieve stress and make people feel more relaxed and happier overall.
If you don’t know where to start, don’t sweat it. All you need is a good pan, olive oil, and go to basically any website or Instagram account to get a handle on your now-burgeoning culinary career. At the very least, get yourself an air fryer.
Devote Time to a Neglected Hobby
You probably have a hobby, one that calms your nerves and usually gets pushed to the side when life gets too damn busy. Take this opportunity to engross yourself in your favorite pastimes.
Play guitar, go for a run, build a model ship, whatever makes you happy. It will help you forget about the past 12 months while giving you a sense of accomplishment.
Working out your body works out your mind at the same time; when you look better, you feel better. There are so many ways to work out at home, essentially plopping you smack dab in the middle of a 24/7 gym that happens to house your bed. Who doesn’t want that? Just make sure you have the right apparel to get the job done.
